When is the Best Time of Year to Climb Kilimanjaro?

While it is possible to climb Mount Kilimanjaro all year round, some months are considered better than others.

Due to Kilimanjaro’s close proximity to the equator, it does not have winter and summer months as we do in the northern hemisphere, but rather, wet and dry seasons, so here we give you a brief breakdown of what kind of weather you can expect. (Average temperatures sourced from internet)

Climbing Kilimanjaro in January

A popular time of year, January heralds the start of the mountains first dry season, and as such, you can expect pleasant sunny days and moderate temperatures in the evenings. Average daily temperatures at the start of the climb are around 25°C or 78 F, but of course, the higher you get, the cooler it gets.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in February

Much like January, the weather on Kilimanjaro is generally good during the month of February, so it is a good time to climb.  Mountain traffic is relatively low during this month, so it is perfect for those looking for a quieter journey to the Roof of Africa.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in March

March can be a good time to climb, but as you move towards the end of the month, you begin to enter the long rainy season, and the chances of getting wet increase significantly.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in April and May

Many Kilimanjaro climbing companies will try to deter first time climbers who want to climb during the months of April and May, as the long rains can make the pathways slippery and treacherous.  Good wet weather gear and buckets of determination are required to climb during these months, but you will have the mountain pretty much to yourself.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in June and July

As soon as we reach the end of June, Kilimanjaro’s ‘main season’ opens up and lasts right through until the end of October.  June and July can be rather chilly on the mountain, but many guides will tell you they are the best months to climb.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in August, September and October

I have grouped these three months together as the weather is pretty much the same throughout.  Dry and with clear skies in the morning and evening, they are good months to make your Kilimanjaro attempt.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in November and December

The short rains arrive at the beginning of November and last through until the end of December. The temperatures remain moderate during these months, and as the showers mainly fall in the afternoon, you can still have good visibility in the morning and at night.

Many people climb Kilimanjaro over Christmas and New Years, and as long as you have set of waterproofs you should be fine!
